WILMINGTON — Apoquinimink’s girls basketball team went into its game against Padua on Dec. 8 having already played two games, while the Pandas were taking the floor for the first time in 2021-22. The Pandas could not get much going offensively all night, and Appo left with a 47-27 victory.

Things started with promise for Padua, as they took a 2-0 lead on a third-chance bucket by Grace Trerotola. The Jags, meanwhile, took a bit to get the offense going, but the Pandas struggled with turnovers and could not add to their lead.

Adia Jones finally got Appoquinimink going with a three-pointer, and they eventually took a 7-4 lead. Another Trerotola hoop brought the Pandas to within one at 7-6, but Appo scored the final three points of the quarter.

The Jags added the first eight points of the second to extend the lead to 12. Those came on a pair of triples, one each from Deja Martin and Kyla Reed, and another field goal from Reed. Padua did not score until Payton Pickard hit a free throw with 4:16 left until halftime. Natalia Frabizzio scored the Pandas’ lone field goal of the second quarter on a slashing drive in the final seconds before halftime.

Reed added 10 more points in the second half as Appo pulled away. The Jags scored nine points in the fourth quarter on free throws, with Alyssa Cresto hitting all six she attempted.

Reed finished with a game-high 17 points, and Martin joined her in double figures with 12. The Jaguars (2-1) will play three games this weekend in the She Got Game Classic in Virginia.

Trerotola led Padua with seven. The Pandas (0-1) travel to Mount Pleasant on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. tip.
