BEAR — Caravel struck early with a pair of goals, and the Buccaneers continued with their strong play for 80 minutes in a 4-0 shutout of Archmere in the quarterfinal round of the DIAA Division II soccer tournament on Nov. 13 at Bob Peoples Stadium.

The seventh-seeded Auks had trouble with No. 2 Caravel’s dynamic duo of Zayd and Zain Akhtar, both juniors. Zayd Akhtar scored twice, and Zain had three assists. They did all of their scoring in the first half.

Zayd Akhtar opened the scoring in the 12th minute with the assist to Zain, and Miles Hood added the Buccaneers’ second tally a mere three minutes later, also with Zain Akhtar on the assist.

Caravel did not let up once they had the two-goal lead. The Bucs had corner kicks in the 28th and 29th minutes, with the first one resulting in a header that sailed over the net. In the 37th minute, the Bucs were awarded a free kick from about 20 yards out far to the right of Archmere keeper Niko Triantafillou. He made a save on the kick, but the ball came loose, forcing Triantafillou to make a sliding stop on the follow-up.

With halftime nearing, the Buccaneers began a counter, with Zain Akhtar sending a long pass upfield for Zayd. He dribbled down the left side and sent a shot into the far side of the net for the 3-0 advantage.

Hood added an assist to his goal in the 51st minute with a highlight-reel play. He inbounded a corner kick to the front of the Auks’ net, and Jacob Wojciehowski went up and headed the ball in.

The Auks could not get too much toward the Caravel keepers, Alejandro Marte in the first half and Mirac Sahin in the second. They had a free kick from 26 yards out in the 62 minute, but the shot missed the top shelf by about a foot.

The Buccaneers finished with a 9-1 advantage on both shots and corner kicks. Marte had their only save. Caravel improved to 13-3 and will meet Delmar in one semifinal, which will be played either Tuesday or Wednesday at a time and location to be announced.

Triantafillou closed out the night with five saves. The Auks finished 11-6.
