It’s been nearly three months since the last high school champion was crowned in Delaware or Maryland. Since then, athletes have been busy in the weight room or sweating in the summer heat.
Most sports begin after Labor Day, but there are a few football games on Sept. 3 in Delaware. Maryland scholastic sports got started earlier this week, and SS. Peter and Paul’s Sabres are in the swing of things.

Thursday, Sept. 3
St. Elizabeth at First State Military, 4 p.m. The Vikings travel to Kent County to get their season started at First State Military. Coach Mike Lemon’s roster is small but talented, with running backs Isaiah Coleman and Mi’Cah Hamilton expected to be busy and Chris Cerasari taking over at quarterback. St. Elizabeth is attempting to reach the postseason for the sixth consective year.
Cape Henlopen at Saint Mark’s, 7 p.m. The Graveyard will be hopping on Thursday night as the Spartans step up in class to welcome Cape Henlopen. Saint Mark’s, under second-year coach Bill DiNardo, returns running back Ta’Son Wallace, but they will have several new faces at skill positions, including quarterback. Saint Mark’s returned to the postseason last year after a two-year absence.
Springside Chestnut Hill (Pa.) at Salesianum, 7:45 p.m. Salesianum begins its quest for a fourth straight appearance in the Class 3A championship game at home against the Blue Devils. Brady Nabb returns at quarterback for coach Gene Delle Donne, whose weapons include Rutgers-bound receiver Jamar Taylor. This is the first of three straight home games against Pennsylvania challengers to start the season.
