High school sports fans in the Diocese of Wilmington — at least those not in the Easton, Md., area — finally got a taste of action last weekend as Saint Mark’s, St. Elizabeth and Salesianum put on the football pads for games in the late-summer humidity.
This week marks the start of the rest of the fall seasons. Catholic schools will be defending titles in cross country and boys soccer, and teams expect to be competitive in all of the fall offerings. Nearly all of the teams will have a game by the end of this week, but not quite all.

Friday, Sept. 11
Saint Mark’s (0-1) at St. Georges (1-0), 4 p.m. The Spartans play up a class for the second straight week. They’ll travel below the canal to face the Hawks. St. Georges got off to a healthy start last week at William Penn.
Haverford (Pa.) at Salesianum (1-0), 5:30 p.m. The Sals stay home for their second straight foe from the Keystone State. They got a strong running game from E.J. Cotton last week, and Jamar Taylor opened the scoring with a long touchdown reception moments into the game.
Saturday, Sept. 12
St. Elizabeth (1-0) at Archmere (0-0), 11 a.m. St. Elizabeth, members of Class 1A, move up to take on longtime rival Archmere at Coaches Field. The Vikings showed off a talented, if small, roster last week at First State Military. Archmere will debut new starters at several skill positions in this late-morning matchup.

The Sals defeated Caesar Rodney for the Division I crown, while Sussex Academy dropped a heartbreaker to Saint Mark’s in Division II.
