NEWARK — Salesianum’s offense remained hot, and Matt Speicher delivered a five-inning complete game as the Sals picked up a baseball 12-2 baseball victory over Mount St. Michael’s of New York on April 20 at Bob Hannah Stadium at the University of Delaware. It was the third straight win for the Sals.

The Mountaineers, who traveled down from the Bronx, N.Y., took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Sals quickly took control with five runs in their first at bat. Speicher led off with a single, and the next three batters reached base. One of those, Jimmy Gray, knocked in courtesy runner Tai Wu with a double, and they would add four more.

Mount St. Michael scored their second run in the second, but the Salesianum offense remained hot in their half. Speicher led off again, this time doubling to left field. Luke Steinrock followed with a towering home run over the right-field wall to make it 6-2. Gray singled, stole two bases and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tre Villanova.

Speicher got stronger as the game progressed. He allowed a two-out double in the third before getting out of the inning with a fly ball to right, and a leadoff single for The Mount in the fourth was erased on a double play initiated by C.J. Moxley. Speicher walked a batter with one out in the fifth, but he retired the next two on strikeouts, his seventh and eighth of the day.

Up by seven heading into their half of the fifth, Salesianum needed three to end the game. The first three batters walked, and after a popup for the first out, Matt McSorley drilled a double to the left-centerfield wall, scoring a pair of runs. Tre Villanova followed with a sharp single to left, bringing Steinrock home with the game-ending run.

Speicher and McSorley each reached base four times, and Steinrock and Villanova had two hits apiece. Villanova had three RBI. The Sals improved to 4-3 and will travel to undefeated William Penn on April 23 at 3:45 p.m.
