WILMINGTON – Ryan Bradigan pitched a complete-game two-hitter to lead top-ranked Conrad past No. 7 St. Mark’s, 3-0, on April 23.

The Red Wolves’ offense had no easy task as it had to face Spartans starter Billy Sullivan. Red Wolves Kyle Walker led off with a double but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Spartans centerfielder Austin Colmery fired the ball to Brian Gilardi, who nailed the runner at third as Chris Ludman applied the tag. That play came in handy as Brock Nowell doubled two batters later, but Sullivan got out of the jam. Moyer’s ninth-inning single helps Vikings win fourth straight on diamond

WILMINGTON – St. Elizabeth’s baseball team had at least two runners on base in six of the final seven innings of its nine-inning affair with Newark Charter on April 20, but after scoring twice in the third, the Vikings were hamstrung in every attempt to plate another. A combination of shaky baserunning, good defense and plain bad luck conspired against the home team.

But that ended in the ninth, when Nate Moyer’s check swing single to right-center scored Brett Brooks with the winning run in a 3-2 decision over the Patriots, who entered the contest at Canby Park with a six-game winning streak and ranked eighth and fifth in two of the three major statewide polls. Moyer’s hit brought jubilation – and a bit of relief – out of the Vikings, who had watched multiple other opportunities to score evaporate. Read more »

Five-run fifth carries Sals past Sussex Tech in first game of twinbill

WILMINGTON – Salesianum shut down Sussex Tech’s potent offense and broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth inning in a 8-4 nonconference baseball win on April 18 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington. It was the first of a pair of games for the Sals on the day; they defeated St. Mark’s in the nightcap.

The Sals, who were the visiting team despite playing just a few miles from their Broom Street campus, did not waste any time getting on the board. Walks to Josh Maguire and John Andreoli, followed by an error, loaded the bases with no outs. Tech starter Brady Parks struck out Joe Setting, but Zach Gwynn followed with a single to left field that scored two runs. Parks settled down after that, and the Sals would not score again until the fifth. Read more »

CLAYMONT – Archmere took a 3-3 tie into the seventh inning against undefeated Conrad on April 18, but the veteran Red Wolves pushed across two runs in the final frame to escape with a 5-3 win in Diamond State Athletic Conference action.

Conrad’s Kyle Maxwell walked to open the seventh, and a wild pitch and stolen base moved him to third. Teammate Kyle Walker laid down a suicide squeeze bunt, bringing Maxwell home with the go-ahead run. There was no play at first on the bunt, and Walker had a single. An Auks throwing error allowed Walker to score an insurance run later in the seventh. Read more »

MILLTOWN – The second-ranked Appoquinimink Jaguars edged No. 1 St. Mark’s, 2-1, on April 10 for their third straight win over the Spartans in the last three years. Jags senior starter Ryan Steckline outdueled Spartans senior Billy Sullivan in a pitchers’ duel.

The Jags scored a pair of runs in the third, the first on a throwing error. Then Steckline singled home a run to give the Jags a 2-0 lead. The Spartans got a run back in the bottom of the third when catcher Matthew Sinko doubled home Matthew Theodorakis to cut the Jags lead to 2-1.

The Spartans loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on three walks. Steckline helped himself by starting a double play. He took a ground ball and threw home, and the relay to first beat the runner for a huge double play.

Steckline threw 5 2/3 innings, striking out nine while scattering 6 hits. Reliever Emir Garret retired all four batters he faced to pick up the save. Sullivan went the distance for the Spartans, striking out six while only giving up five hits. The Jags (7-0) got two hits from Jarrett Weglarz. They will travel to Tatnall on Thursday for a 3:45 p.m. start. The Spartans (6-1) are at Caravel on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
