HOCKESSIN – St. Elizabeth’s girls basketball team stuck close to Sanford into the second quarter, but the Warriors took control with a dominating eight minutes before the half and went on to a 54-34 win over the Vikings on Feb. 3.

Sanford went ahead early on as a variety of players got on the board, and a follow shot by Naomi Allen made the score 12-7 in favor of the Warriors. St. Elizabeth responded, with Ericka Huggins scoring off an offensive rebound, and Taniyah Reese hitting a runner to cut the lead to one. After Tyler Edwards answered at the end of the first quarter, ZaMylah Seda-Owens hit a turnaround shot for the first points of the second, again getting the margin to one.

But the Warriors got their defense and running game going, and with Huggins on the bench with foul trouble, the lead began to grow. Edwards got it started with a pair of free throws, and Asia Adams drained a three-point shot. After a turnover, Allen deked her way around a defender and went up for two, and she added two free throws the next time down the floor. Reese made a driving layup to end the Sanford run at nine points, but the Warriors scored the final six points of the half.

The margin remained in the teens for much of the rest of the game. Huggins and Seda-Owens did most of the scoring in the third, but Allen was too much down low. Sanford’s crisp passing and running game led to several high-percentage looks for Allen and others.

Jada Snow had 16, eight of those from the free throw line, to lead the Warriors. Allen and Adams each had 12. Sanford (9-5) is at St. Andrew’s on Feb. 6 at 5:30 p.m.

Huggins led the Vikings with 18, while Seda-Owens added 8. St. Elizabeth (12-3) is at Howard on Feb. 6 at 4:45 p.m.
