WILMINGTON – Ursuline’s lacrosse team has had a standout season, with victories over top-10 opponents Polytech, St. Mark’s, Caravel and Padua. But the Raiders’ game on May 6 at Archmere was a disappointing 10-5 defeat to the third-ranked Auks, giving fourth-ranked Ursuline extra motivation heading into its match May 11 vs. No. 5 Wilmington Charter.

The Raiders came out energized, scoring 11 times in the game’s first 15 minutes on their way to a wet 20-9 win over the Force. Erin O’Doherty led the way with six goals for the victors, while Jane Lyons added five. Read more »

Padua overwhelms Charter in soccer shutout

WILMINGTON – Charter of Wilmington goalkeeper Lydia McIntyre wears two zeroes on her jersey, and she was the main reason the score between the Force and top-ranked Padua on May 8 featured only zeroes for nearly three-quarters of the match. But the Pandas’ crisp passing could be denied only so long, and Padua captured a 2-0 win over their fellow Division I title contender.

Padua had scored 11 combined goals in its last two games, but McIntyre – with several assists from her teammates – changed that trend. The keeper was credited with 13 saves, several of which were very impressive. Her first notable stop came in the 15th minute, when Lindsay Machamer got loose near the top of the 18-yard box. Her shot was deflected, but McIntyre was there to make the stop. Read more »

Two goals five minutes apart lift Charter past Archmere in boys soccer

By

CLAYMONT – Wilmington Charter junior Rhys Newcombe found something that worked on Nov. 1 at Archmere, so he went back to it, and his resulting two goals helped lift the Force past Archmere, 4-2, in a nonconference boys soccer matchup featuring two of the state’s better teams.

The teams were tied at a goal apiece at halftime, but after being dominated in possession time in the first half, Charter came out with something different in mind after intermission. The Force picked up a corner kick in the 50th minute, and Nolan Constantine sent the ball over the crease on the inbounds. There, Newcombe was waiting, and he headed the ball past Archmere keeper Blake Parker for the 2-1 lead. Read more »

By

WILMINGTON – Ursuline’s field hockey team traveled to Charter of Wilmington on Oct. 26 having dropped its last two games, so the Raiders needed a win to push their winning percentage back over .500 and pick up valuable points that may determine whether they make the state tournament. They delivered, putting up a solid defensive effort and scoring a 2-0 victory on a cold afternoon.

Neither offense could get much going in the opening minutes, but Ursuline got on the board first at the 22:05 mark of the first half. Teddie Elliman stole a Force pass and passed the ball into the circle. Juliana Copeman sent the ball toward the cage, where Anna Shearer emerged with it and scored from in close. Read more »

WILMINGTON – St. Mark’s got some early pressure and the first goal in its boys soccer game at Charter School of Wilmington on Oct. 18, but the Force responded quickly and showed why they are ranked third in the state in Division I as they took a 3-1 home victory. Kevin Eriksen scored twice for Charter, which improved to x-x.

The Spartans had the first real scoring opportunity in the fourth minute, but Force goalkeeper Ben McQuillin snared a throw-in from Chris Ludman. After that, however, Charter went on the offensive and kept Spartans keeper Tommy Gibb busy all afternoon. Read more »
