Pandas need four sets to hold off persistent Seahawks, advance in volleyball tourney

WILMINGTON – Padua’s volleyball team opened its quest for the 2017 state championship with a bang, steamrolling Delaware Military Academy, 25-12, in a first set that included a 12-1 run. But the 16th-seeded Seahawks made sure everyone in a packed gymnasium at Salesianum that they belonged in the second round, storming back to tie the match after two sets.

The final two sets, however, belonged to the No. 1 Pandas, who advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 3-1 win. Set scores were 25-12, 23-25, 25-18, and 25-12. Padua was not surprised at the effort from DMA, a team the Pandas swept during the regular season. Read more »

DMA takes control in second half, Alleyne scores five times in win over Spartans

WILMINGTON – St. Mark’s used an effective running game to take a 21-14 halftime lead on Oct. 21 against Delaware Military Academy. But the Seahawks made all the necessary adjustments during the intermission, and Corahn Alleyne scored three of his five touchdowns in the second half to lead DMA to a 33-21 win at Baynard Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks’ defense closed the holes that existed in the first half, shutting down the Spartans’ offense. Read more »

Young Vikings fall on gridiron to DMA, 42-7

WILMINGTON – St. Elizabeth took an early lead over Delaware Military Academy when the teams met in a nonconference football game on Sept. 29, and for a quarter the Vikings stayed with the No, 2-ranked team in Division II. But DMA simply brought too much Corahn Alleyne, who scored five touchdowns in a 42-7 win at Baynard Stadium. Read more »

Sals cruise into lacrosse semifinals

WILMINGTON – Salesianum, the second seed in the boys’ state lacrosse tournament, outscored No. 7 Delaware Military Academy, 15-2, over the final three quarters to take home a 19-4 win on May 27. The Sals advance to the semifinals against sixth-seeded Caesar Rodney on Wednesday night.

The Seahawks stayed close in the first quarter as Marcus Cook and Dallas Towner scored early goals. The Sals got goals from seniors Mike Drake and Taylor Witherell to lead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter. After A Towner goal to cut the Sals lead to 5-3, Salesianum’s offense exploded. Brett Hobbs, Patrick Drake and Witherell scored in a 42-second span to make it 8-3 lead.

Carter Klassman cut the Sals’ lead in half at 8-4 with 4:34 left in the first half. The Sals picked up five straight goals, including two each from Witherell and Patrick Drake. One of Drake’s was into an empty net when he picked off a clearing pass.  The Sals took the 13-4 lead into the break and added five more goals in the third quarter.

The Sals (13-3) will wait for the time and location for their semifinal showdown with the Riders on Wednesday. The Sals beat the Riders, 17-3, on May 16.

Pitching, defense carry Seahawks past Pandas in softball tourney

PIKE CREEK – Fifth-seeded Delaware Military Academy used solid pitching and great defense to edge No. 12 Padua, 1-0, in a first-round softball tournament game on May 23 at Midway Softball Complex. Freshmen Delani Sheehan pitched a seven-hitter, and Alexus Novotny drove in the only run for the Seahawks (14-5).

The Pandas started strong in the top of the first inning as Caitlyn Baxter had a leadoff infield single and advanced to third on a Hannah Williams double with no outs. After a pop out, senior Abby Cunningham hit a fly ball to right fielder Ashlee Conaty, who fired home to nail the speedy Baxter and keep the game scoreless. Late surge lifts DMA past Auks in Diamond State softball

CLAYMONT – Delaware Military Academy broke open a tie game with four runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh and took a 10-4 decision at Archmere in Diamond State Athletic Conference softball on April 27 in Claymont.

Archmere pitcher Kayla Murray had retired six consecutive Seahawks heading into the sixth, but the DMA bats came alive. Ashley Conaty led off with a single just over the infield, and Clare Henry and Rachel Savini each bunted for a single to load the bases. Kayla Frazer singled sharply to left field to score two, and, after one batter was retired, Nicole Elliott tripled down the left-field line to plate Savini and Frazer. Just like that, it was 8-4. Auks down DMA, win fifth straight girls soccer match

CLAYMONT – The rain that pounded New Castle County on April 6, causing the postponement of dozens of high school sports events, had mostly gone away by Friday. In its place was a stiff, cold wind, and it was in that atmosphere that Delaware Military Academy’s girls soccer team traveled to Archmere for a Diamond State Athletic Conference showdown.

The Auks, ranked fourth in the state in Division II, controlled possession most of the afternoon, and they were able to sneak in a single goal in the 48th minute to take a spirited battle with No. 5 DMA. Read more »

Big second quarter carries Auks girls past DMA

WILMINGTON – Archmere used a big second quarter to earn a significant road win against Delaware Military Academy in Diamond State Athletic Conference girls basketball on Feb. 14. The Auks scored 22 second-quarter points while holding the Seahawks to just six to take control on their way to a 48-29 triumph.

The Auks were trailing, 14-13, early in the second when they started a 19-2 run. Senior Danaziah Brown hit a three-pointer, followed by a steal and a layup. Junior Sydney Niumataiwalu converted an old-fashioned three-point play, and Brown drained another three. Then freshman Madison Stewart scored four straight before Amanda Denning scored to make it 32-16 at halftime. Read more »

Strong start leads Seahawks past Pandas on hardcourt

WILMINGTON – Delaware Military Academy jumped out to an early lead and held o for a 46-39 win over Padua on Dec. 21.

The Seahawks scored the first seven points of the game thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play from freshman Clare Henry. She was just getting started, as another bucket put her team up, 11-3. DMA held the Pandas to two field goals in the first quarter, both coming in the final minute, and the lead was 13-5 after one. Read more »

Pandas remain undefeated in pool with win over DMA

WILMINGTON – Padua fell behind after one event, but the Pandas rebounded nicely for a 114-56 win over Delaware Military Academy in girls swimming on Dec. 20 at Charter School of Wilmington. With the win, Padua improved to 3-0, while DMA suffered its first loss after two wins. Read more »
