Sister Courtney, inspiration for ‘Trouble with Angels,’ dies at 95

SINSINAWA, Wis. — A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 2 for Dominican Sister John Eudes Courtney, who spent 68 years in religious life. Sister Courtney died Dec. 22 at age 95 at the Sinsinawa Dominicans’ motherhouse in Sinsinawa.

She served as inspiration for the character of Mary Clancy in the book “Life With Mother Superior” by Jane Trahey, which was turned into the movie “The Trouble With Angels,” starring Hayley Mills as Mary Clancy and Rosalind Russell as the mother superior. Trahey was best friends with young Mary Courtney when both were students at Providence High School in Chicago.

The Caterina Benincasa Gallery and Book Shop on the grounds of Holy Spirit Church in New Castle is a bright light in the diocese that’s hidden under a bushel basket of sorts.

The Dominican Sisters’ Benincasa monastery is on the parish grounds and the impressive shop they have stocked with Catholic art and religious goods is meant to be a stopping point or, more precisely, a shopping point for pilgrims who visit the imposing Our Lady Queen of Peace Shrine by the church. New Castle sister ministers to Baltimore parish through her artwork

NEW CASTLE – Catholics may not recognize the ministry of Dominican Sister Mary Grace Thul at first glance, but it is very visible. The artist, who lives at the Caterina Benincasa Dominican Monastery on the grounds of Holy Spirit Parish in New Castle, spreads the message of faith through her work. Parishioners at St. Ambrose Church in Baltimore already have her art in their church, and soon they will be seeing much more.

Sister Mary Grace created several canvases for the parish, which is in the Park Heights section of Baltimore, a few blocks from Pimlico Raceway. The oil paintings depict several prominent church figures and will soon hang in the alcove of St. Ambrose. Read more »
