Three-run sixth pushes Sals past Hodgson, into baseball semifinals

WILMINGTON – Salesianum and Hodgson engaged in an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel when the teams met in state baseball tournament quarterfinal action on May 31, but the Sals’ bats came through late in a 4-2 victory. Sallies moves on to face top-seeded Conrad on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium.

The 13th-seeded Silver Eagles scratched out a run in the top of the fourth, and with the way their pitcher, William Hart, was dealing, it appeared that lone tally might be enough. But No. 5 Salesianum rebounded to tie the game in the fifth and scored three times in the bottom of the sixth. That was enough to get the victory. Read more »

St. Thomas More girls suffer first loss on trip to Hodgson

GLASGOW – St. Thomas More made a valiant comeback effort on Dec. 9 at Hodgson, but in the end, the Ravens missed on too many opportunities, and Hodgson came through when needed to take a 45-36 nonconference girls basketball victory.

The young Ravens played with just eight girls, only one of whom was not a freshman or sophomore. St. Thomas More gave the Silver Eagles too many second and third chances on offense, and numerous Ravens shots would not fall as they fell to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore Kayla Braxton-Young, after being held scoreless in the first quarter, led the Silver Eagles the rest of the way, putting up a game-high 18 points. Read more »

St. Mark’s edges Hodgson on last-second field goal

Auks break out the bats in win over Hodgson

WILMINGTON – Archmere and Hodgson met on April 30 at Frawley Stadium, and the Auks jumped out to a 5-0 lead on their way to a 14-9 win.

The Auks scored three runs in the first as Colin Lynch and Tighe Watson singled. Lynch would score on a wild pitch, and Watson came home on a Daniel Matranga sacrifice fly. An error led to Archmere’s third run. Read more »

Raiders use long-distance prowess to move on in girls’ tourney

NEWARK – Top-seeded Ursuline used the long ball to defeat the eighth seed, Hodgson, 55-37, on March 5 in a girls’ basketball quarterfinal matchup at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Raiders will meet No. 4 Concord in a semifinal game on Wednesday at approximately 8 p.m., also at the Bob.

Ursuline came out firing as senior Alyssa Irons drained three deep three-point shots and sophomore Maggie Connolly hit another for a quick 12-6 lead. Irons said she wasn’t “feeling it” in warmups, but that changed. Read more »

Money scores 32 as explosive Vikings win, 91-59

WILMINGTON – St. Elizabeth’s boys basketball team, ranked fourth in the state, outscored the fifth-ranked Hodgson Silver Eagles in the second quarter, 28-10, en route to a 91-59 victory Saturday afternoon at the St. E Center.

Junior Jordan Money drained two three-pointers to give the Vikings a 6-0 lead, but Hodgson got back into it with a few triples themselves. Two baskets and and a free throw by sophomore Nate Thomas put St. Elizabeth ahead, 17-14, and after the Silver Eagles’ Sheldon Pride tied it with a three-pointer, Thomas scored on a three-point play and Money hit a three before the buzzer to give the Vikings a 23-17 lead going into the second quarter. Rice scores twice in Spartans shutout of Hodgson

MILLTOWN – St. Mark’s took advantage of its opportunities, while Hodgson was unable to capitalize at any point as the Spartans claimed a 24-0 win over the Silver Eagles in Division II football Friday night. The result left both teams with a 4-4 record.

Senior Jamai Rice was an offensive workhorse for St. Mark’s, scoring two touchdowns, to lead the Spartans on Senior Night. The other touchdown was scored by Eric Cella, who also was playing his last game on the school’s campus. Read more »

Ursuline overwhelms Hodgson to advance to basketball semis

NEWARK – Top-seeded Ursuline jumped on Hodgson early in the first quarter and did not let up, cruising to a 54-35 win in the last of four quarterfinal-round games Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Raiders started the game with a three-point shot from junior Adrianna Hahn on the first possession, followed by a three from sophomore Kailyn Kampert. Next it was eighth-grader Maggie Connolly’s turn, as she converted an old-fashioned three-point play. Ursuline led, 24-14 after one. The Raiders played their usual suffocating defense, holding the Silver Eagles to seven second-quarter points while forcing 16 turnovers in the first half. Read more »
