Raiders lacrosse bounces back with definitive win over top-5 Charter squad

WILMINGTON – Ursuline’s lacrosse team has had a standout season, with victories over top-10 opponents Polytech, St. Mark’s, Caravel and Padua. But the Raiders’ game on May 6 at Archmere was a disappointing 10-5 defeat to the third-ranked Auks, giving fourth-ranked Ursuline extra motivation heading into its match May 11 vs. No. 5 Wilmington Charter.

The Raiders came out energized, scoring 11 times in the game’s first 15 minutes on their way to a wet 20-9 win over the Force. Erin O’Doherty led the way with six goals for the victors, while Jane Lyons added five. Read more »

Raiders rally for overtime lacrosse win at No. 5 Caravel

BEAR – Brooke Schmeusser scored 23 seconds into overtime to lead Ursuline past fifth-ranked Caravel, 13-12, on March 28. The Raiders were down, 10-6, late in the second half but rallied for the key nonconference win. Read more »

Raiders score much-needed field hockey win at Charter

WILMINGTON – Ursuline’s field hockey team traveled to Charter of Wilmington on Oct. 26 having dropped its last two games, so the Raiders needed a win to push their winning percentage back over .500 and pick up valuable points that may determine whether they make the state tournament. They delivered, putting up a solid defensive effort and scoring a 2-0 victory on a cold afternoon.

Neither offense could get much going in the opening minutes, but Ursuline got on the board first at the 22:05 mark of the first half. Teddie Elliman stole a Force pass and passed the ball into the circle. Juliana Copeman sent the ball toward the cage, where Anna Shearer emerged with it and scored from in close. Read more »

Archmere mounts second-half comeback to defeat Raiders

CLAYMONT – Archmere came back from a halftime deficit on May 7 to defeat Ursuline, 13-11, in nonconference field hockey in a game at home that was not a home game.

The rainy weather forced the game from Ursuline’s Serviam Field to Archmere, which has turf, but the Auks wore their road uniforms and acted as the visitors. They were trailing by a goal at the half but rebounded for the win. Read more »

Schmeusser scores six to lead Raiders lacrosse past Riders, 18-12

WILMINGTON – Bridget Schmeusser scored six goals to pace a powerful Urusline Raiders past the Caesar Rodney Riders, 18-12, in nonconference girls lacrosse on April 25. Schmeusser also added two assists, and Jane Lyons added four goals and one assist.

Caesar Rodney got off to a good start as Kourtney Olsen scored on a man-up for the 1-0 lead. The Riders had three more quality chances to add to their lead, but UA goalkeeper Erin Davis made some great saves. Read more »

Brother-sister team of Patrick and Jane Lyons start nonprofit to give incarcerated youth a second chance

 

WILMINGTON — Growing up in a stable, two-parent home in a comfortable Wilmington suburb, Patrick and Jane Lyons could be forgiven if they ignored a population living close by but in a totally different reality. But that’s not the way the siblings were raised.
