Pandas get better as night rolls on, sweep their way to volleyball final

MILLTOWN – After escaping with a two-point win in the first set, then pulling away in the second, the Padua volleyball team left no doubt that they belonged in the state championship match coming up on Monday night.

A 7-1 run early in the third put the Pandas up, 12-4, over St. Mark’s, and Padua would go on to a 25-12 win to complete the sweep in the semifinal round Nov. 9 at St. Mark’s. The top-seeded Pandas will attempt to win their first state title since 2013 when they meet No. 3 Ursuline at the Bob Carpenter Center on Monday after the consolation match, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Read more »

Pandas handle tough Archmere squad, will face St. Mark’s in volleyball semis

WILMINGTON – Top-seeded Padua advanced to the semifinal round of the state volleyball tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Archmere on Nov. 7 at the St. E Center, but the Auks gave the Pandas all they could handle. Padua took the sets by scores of 25-21, 25-23, and 25-21.

The Pandas remained undefeated at 17-0 heading into Thursday night’s semifinal match against Catholic Conference foe St. Mark’s on the Spartans’ home floor. That one will follow the first semifinal pitting No. 3 Ursuline against No. 2 Tower Hill. Read more »

Powerful Pandas sweep Auks in top-six volleyball battle

CLAYMONT – A near-sellout crowd turned out at Moglia Fieldhouse on Oct. 20 to see top-ranked Padua take on No. 6 Archmere, and the visiting Pandas silenced the Auks’ faithful with a 3-0 sweep. Set scores were 25-14, 25-18, 25-18.

Archmere came out hot early, taking a 5-2 lead in the first. But the Pandas used contributions from their deep roster to take control. Jess Molen was scoring with regularity on kills, and she added a few aces, and Michelle Kozicki came on to pick up points on a kill and a pair of blocks. Emily Jarome then warmed up, and the defending state player of the year made her presence known over and over and over again as setter Emma Lucey went her way all night. Read more »

Jarome’s all-around game paces Pandas in volleyball sweep of Spartans

MILLTOWN – Padua’s volleyball team kept its season-opening win streak going, while handing St. Mark’s it’s first defeat of 2017 in a 3-0 win Sept. 19. The set scores in the first Catholic Conference match of the year were 25-21, 25-19 and 25-17.

A large, spirited crowd was on hand to watch the Pandas, ranked third in the state by 302Sports.com, battle the No. 4 Spartans. Both teams came into the evening with 3-0 records and just one lost set between them, as Padua defeated Newark Charter by a 3-1 score. Padua advances to volleyball quarters with sweep over Appoquinimink

BRANDYWINE HUNDRED – When Padua’s volleyball team met Appoquinimink on Nov. 5 at Brandywine High School, the third-seeded Pandas were playing their first match in nine days, while the Jaguars had seen action just two days prior. The Pandas survived a rough start to claim a 3-0 victory in the second round of the state volleyball tournament. Set scores were 25-17, 25-9 and 25-17.

Pandas cap regular season with hard-fought marathon win over Raiders

WILMINGTON – In front of a boisterous sellout crowd on Senior Night, second-ranked Padua managed a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 4 Ursuline. The set scores were 25-23, 20-25, 25-27, 25-21 and 15-12 as the Pandas finished the regular season at 13-2.

Long rallies and powerful kills were the hallmarks of the first set. The Raiders found themselves ahead, 7-1, getting kills from Taylor Wright, Corinne Furey and Emma Popham. But Padua junior Emily Jarome took over, with three of her match-high 31 kills cut the lead to 14-12. Two straight aces from Raiders senior Alexandra Kochie put Ursuline ahead, 23-21. Padua responded, however, with four straight to win the set as Jessica Molen recorded three consecutive kills, and Jarome blasted one for the win. Read more »

Padua unleashes multiple weapons in four-set win at St. Mark’s

MILLTOWN – After dropping the first set to St. Mark’s in the teams’ Catholic Conference volleyball match Oct. 25, Padua roared back to win the next two. The Spartans, however, rebounded in the fourth set and was in the lead, 21-16, and the large home crowd geared up for a fifth set.

But Padua had other ideas, and with Emily Jarome on serve the state’s second-ranked team won the final nine points to take the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-1, on Senior Night at St. Mark’s. The Pandas improved to 12-2 with just one match remaining before the state tournament begins next week. Read more »

Tower Hill pulls five-set upset at Padua

WILMINGTON – Tower Hill came into Padua Academy on Oct. 5 and pulled off a volleyball upset, coming from two sets down to defeat the top-ranked Pandas, 3-2. Maddie Sachs led the way with 22 kills, while Alex Thomson added 20 for the Hillers, who lost a five-setter to the Pandas last season.

Pandas go to 5-0 in volleyball with sweep of Raiders

WILMINGTON – Second-ranked Padua made the short trip to Ursuline on Sept. 22 for a key Catholic Conference volleyball matchup, and the Pandas swept No. 4 Ursuline in front of a packed house. The scores were 25-28, 25-18 and 25-17. Emily Jarome led the Pandas with 13 kills, 13 digs, two aces and a block, and she had plenty of help.

Padua (5-0) jumped on the Raiders early, as Claire Bisson and Jarome had kills to give the Pandas a 5-3 lead. Padua went on a 10-3 run to put the set away, as Jarome and Taylor Valletti each had a pair of kills in that span. Kills by Abigail Rzucidlo and Taylor Wright made the score 20-15, but Padua regained control on an Emma Lucey kill. Then Jarome hammered one home for a 22-15 advantage.
