Sals surge to boys lacrosse championship

BEAR – Garrett Cannon’s football career at Salesianum’s quarterback ended in November with him lying on the grass at Baynard Stadium with a broken leg, a dislocated ankle and tendon damage. He had to watch his teammates play the state championship game from a wheelchair on the sidelines at Delaware Stadium.

He worked his way back to be ready to go for the lacrosse season, and on Saturday night, he scored three times – including No. 1 Salesianum’s opening and closing goals of the contest – to help lead the Sals to a 16-7 win over sixth-seeded Appoquinimink for the state title at Bob Peoples Stadium at Caravel Academy. It was the school’s eighth championship. Read more »

Sals reach 10th straight lacrosse final with win over Archmere

BEAR – Salesianum scored early and often in its state tournament lacrosse match June 1 vs. Archmere, taking a 20-10 win and earning another trip to the championship game. It is the Sals’ 10th consecutive appearance in the final; they have won six of those and seven state titles overall.

The top-seeded Sals will meet No. 6 Appoquinimink on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Caravel Academy, the same site as Thursday’s semifinals. Tickets are $7 and available at diaa.ticketleap.com. The final will be streamed for a fee at www.nfhsnetwork.com. Read more »

Tower Hill overwhelms Archmere in girls lacrosse quarterfinals

WILMINGTON – Tower Hill got six goals from Kiva Walsh and five goals and seven assists from Abby Manning in an 18-7 win over Archmere in a quarterfinal-round matchup in the girls’ lacrosse tournament at Tower Hill. The Hillers (13-3), seeded third, will face No. 2 Polytech in the semifinals Thursday at Wesley College in Dover.

Sixth-seeded Archmere started strong, with Delaney Dearing scoring 26 seconds into the contest. That is when Walsh and Manning went to work. Walsh scored off a feed from Manning to tie it at 1 with 21:15 left in the first half. Read more »

Sals fall to nation’s eighth-ranked lacrosse team, 19-9

WILMINGTON – The top-ranked boys lacrosse team in Delaware hosted the eighth-ranked team in the nation on May 14, and Salesianum fell to Malvern Prep (Pa.), 19-9.

The Friars jumped on the Sals early, scoring the first two goals for a quick lead. The teams then began trading goals. Garrett Cannon got the Sals on the board on a powerful shot to the upper corner of the net. Malvern scored, but Salesianum answered with a Nickolas Bramble goal on a man-up situation. Cannon scored his second, and Salesianum ended the first quarter down, 4-3. Read more »
