Sals’ Mike Drake leads all-state selections from Catholic schools

Salesianum senior attack Mike Drake, who scored two goals in the Sals’ championship-game win on June 3, has been named the 2017 state boys lacrosse player of the year. Drake will continue his athletic career at the University of Notre Dame.

He is one of six players from Catholic schools who earned first-team honors. The selections were announced June 5 by the state lacrosse coaches association. Read more »

Sals grab early lead, win third straight lacrosse title and ninth overall

DOVER – Second-seeded Salesianum’s lacrosse team won its third straight title with a 13-5 win over fourth-seeded Cape Henlopen on June 3 at Dover High School. The Sals got a goal by Patrick Drake 15 seconds in and never trailed in winning their sixth title in the last seven years and ninth overall. Read more »

Cape too strong in girls lacrosse final, but Spartans enjoyed fantastic run

FREDERICA – Fourth-seeded St Mark’s enjoyed a splendid season in girls lacrosse, going from missing the tournament in 2016 to earning its third finals appearance this season. Unfortunately for the Spartans, they ran into a buzzsaw in No. 3 Cape Henlopen, who captured their ninth straight state championship with a 19-7 win on May 30 at the Delaware Turf Sports Complex in Frederica. Sals cruise into lacrosse semifinals

WILMINGTON – Salesianum, the second seed in the boys’ state lacrosse tournament, outscored No. 7 Delaware Military Academy, 15-2, over the final three quarters to take home a 19-4 win on May 27. The Sals advance to the semifinals against sixth-seeded Caesar Rodney on Wednesday night.

The Seahawks stayed close in the first quarter as Marcus Cook and Dallas Towner scored early goals. The Sals got goals from seniors Mike Drake and Taylor Witherell to lead 4-2 at the end of the first quarter. After A Towner goal to cut the Sals lead to 5-3, Salesianum’s offense exploded. Brett Hobbs, Patrick Drake and Witherell scored in a 42-second span to make it 8-3 lead.

Carter Klassman cut the Sals’ lead in half at 8-4 with 4:34 left in the first half. The Sals picked up five straight goals, including two each from Witherell and Patrick Drake. One of Drake’s was into an empty net when he picked off a clearing pass.  The Sals took the 13-4 lead into the break and added five more goals in the third quarter.

The Sals (13-3) will wait for the time and location for their semifinal showdown with the Riders on Wednesday. The Sals beat the Riders, 17-3, on May 16.

Auks overwhelm Conrad, advance to boys lacrosse quarterfinals

CLAYMONT – The fifth-seeded Archmere Auks scored early and often to cruise past No. 12 Conrad, 20-2, on May 24 in a boys lacrosse tournament opening-round matchup. Mitchell Moyer and Cole Bauer each scored five goals to pace the Auks. Read more »

Spartans hold off Auks, advance to girls lacrosse championship

BEAR – The fourth-seeded St Mark’s Spartans built up a six-goal lead and held off a furious rally from the No. 1 seed, Archmere, to take a 14-13 victory on May 23 at Caravel Academy. With the win, the Spartans advance to the state championship Thursday night.

The Auks trailed, 14-8, late in the second half before they made their rally. After Archmere scoried with 46 seconds left, the most important groundball of the game was picked up by St. Mark’s junior Kendra Schweizer, who then ran away from the Auks’ defense to seal the win and send the Spartans to the championship. Megargee caps late comeback, sends Spartans into girls lacrosse semis

MILLTOWN – St. Mark’s and Polytech played nearly 51 minutes of girls lacrosse on May 20, but the state quarterfinal matchup came down to the final 51 seconds. Facing elimination, the Spartans’ Paige Megargee tied the score in dramatic fashion with 11 seconds left in regulation, and Megargee struck again early in overtime to send fourth-seeded St. Mark’s into the semifinal round.

Top seed Archmere joined by Ursuline, St. Mark’s and Padua in girls lacrosse field

The girls’ lacrosse state tournament begins Thursday with four Catholic schools in the field of 10 teams. The Archmere Auks took the top seed thanks to winning their last 14 regular-season games.

The Auks (14-1) are led on offense by a pair of sophomores in Caroline Donovan and Kate Olsen. They also get key scoring from Riley DeBaecke and Delaney Dearing. The Auks’ defense has been stout this year, with seniors Lorin Donovan, Maggie Malloy and Camryn Howarth leading the way. Read more »

Auks girls win 14th straight, earn top seed in lacrosse state tournament

GREENVILLE – The second-ranked Archmere girls lacrosse team had a great day on May 15. First the Auks defeated Tatnall, 19-9, then they earned the top seed in the state tournament that starts on Thursday.

Tatnall did strike first, as Erica Hager scored early to give the Hornets their only lead. The Auks(14-1) answered quickly as Delaney Dearing scored. Riley DeBaecke, Caroline Donovan, and Kate Olsen scored in succession to give the Auks a 4-1 lead. Donovan and Dearing each added a pair of goals to give the Auks an 8-2 lead. Read more »
