Watkins scores three times in Spartans big win on homecoming weekend

MILLTOWN – Andrew Watkins ran for 145 yards and three touchdowns, and the St. Mark’s defense clamped down on Mount Pleasant, leading the Spartans to a 58-7 nonconference football win Oct. 6. It was the third straight convincing win for the Spartans, and it came in front of a homecoming crowd that included several recent graduates.

St. Mark’s held a 13-7 lead midway through the second quarter on touchdown runs of one yard by Watkins and 10 yards by Matt Dougherty, and they erased any doubt about the outcome of the game with three more scores before halftime. Read more »

Green Knights overcome deficit for home softball win over Auks

PENNY HILL – The Mount Pleasant Green Knights overcame a four-run deficit to defeat the Archmere Auks, 10-6, in nonconference softball on March 25. Green Knights catcher Kelsey Eroh had four hits, including two doubles.

The Auks took advantage of poor fielding to jump out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. The Green Knights would pick up 10 runs on 10 hits in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to grab the lead. A pair of freshmen had two hits each as Jalia Lawrence and Annalise Jackson got the offense going.

Lawrence came in the fourth inning to pick up the win for Mount. The Auks’ defense made several great plays, including two over-the-shoulder catches by Annie Penrod and Jocelyn Phillips. The Auks (0-2) will travel to St. Elizabeth on Wednesday for a 3:45 p.m. start. The Green Knights (1-0) host A.I. DuPont on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

Andreoli’s homers lead Sals in comeback win at Mount Pleasant

PENNY HILL – John Andreoli hit two home runs to lead Salesianum to a huge comeback win over Mount Pleasant on March 25. The Sals scored six runs in the top if the seventh and final inning to take home the 11-9 win.

Sals, Ursuline move closer to swimming tournament with wins over Mount Pleasant

WILMINGTON – With just under two weeks remaining until the state championship meet, defending champions Ursuline and Salesianum added victories over Mount Pleasant to their dual-meet records on Feb. 13 at P.S. DuPont Middle School. The Raiders won all but two events in a 104-66 win, while the Sals counted on their depth to take down the Green Knights’ boys, 87-71. Read more »

Brown’s three-pointer caps Sals’ comeback over top-ranked Mount Pleasant

PENNY HILL – With the clock winding down and his team trailing Mount Pleasant by a point, Salesianum sophomore forward Jack Brown knew what he had to do. Mike Kempski had driven into the lane, attracting three Green Knights defenders, when he kicked the ball out to Brown beyond the three-point line.

Brown calmly squared up and released the ball, which swished through the net a second later, and the Sals had a 39-37 lead with 33.2 seconds to go. The Sals played the necessary defense on Mount’s final two possessions, and they escaped with an upset road win over the state’s top-ranked team on Feb. 4 in front of a raucous, sold-out crowd. Cold second half dooms Sals against No. 3 Mount Pleasant

WILMINGTON – Third-ranked Mount Pleasant took control in the second half and secured a huge road win at No. 8 Salesianum on Feb. 6. The Green Knights outscored the Sals in the second half, 20-6, on the way to a 48-27 win.

Host Salesianum jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead, as Michael Kempski and Trevon Alderman hit field goals. The Green Knights’ Sharif Holland hit a three, but Tariq Ingraham scored off an offensive rebound, and Duncan Treratola added a free throw for a 7-3 Salesianum lead. Mount ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, the last three of which came on a shot by Raheim Burnett as the quarter wore down. Read more »

LEWES – St. Elizabeth had gotten off to a 6-0 start this boys basketball season, including an impressive win over St. Raymond’s (N.Y.) on Monday at Slam Dunk to the Beach at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. The Vikings met 5-1 Mount Pleasant on Tuesday on the final day of the annual tournament, dropping a 65-42 decision to the Green Knights, who came out on fire and took any doubt about the result away early on. CLAYMONT – Leah DaCosta scored early in the overtime period to lift Archmere to a 3-2 win over No. 6 Mount Pleasant in a field hockey matinee Friday in Claymont. DiVincenzo scores 30 to help send Salesianum back to boys hoops final

NEWARK — Salesianum’s basketball team went through some tough times internally in the last month, coach Brendan Haley said, but the Sals came together as the playoffs approached. As the players grew closer, their play improved, at the right time of the year. As a result, the team will play for its second straight state title Saturday.

Donte DiVincenzo played like a Division I college player Thursday night, scoring 30 points and grabbing eight rebounds as the sixth-seeded Sals upset the No. 2 Mount Pleasant Green Knights, 60-49, in a semifinal contest at the Bob Carpenter Center.
