On the weekend of Dec. 2-3, our parishes will be conducting the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR). I urge you to offer this appeal your prayerful and vocal support. Your efforts are vital to its success.

In his letter to consecrated religious marking the beginning of the year of Consecrated Life, Pope Francis outlines various aims for the celebrations, the first of which is “to look to the past with gratitude.” In this spirit, I ask for your heartfelt support of the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR.) The RFR furnishes immediate financial assistance for the day to day care of aging religious and helps their communities implement long-term retirement strategies. Read more »

‘An American missionary’ : Prepared for Africa, Oblate sister instead landed in Childs

CHILDS, Md. – The Oblate Sisters of St. Francis de Sales have been educating children in some form in Childs, Md., since 1954. One sister arrived in Cecil County before the first kindergarten class arrived, and she is still there today as a beloved volunteer.

Sister Mary Bertha Hennessy stopped teaching two years ago, but she remains active at the school, since, as she says, “We don’t retire. Religious don’t retire. There’s always something to do in the house.” Read more »
