Those not from our area might believe they understand the flood of emotions coming from people after the Philadelphia Eagles ended their franchise Super Bowl drought and claimed their first NFL Championship since 1960.

They think they get it. Other teams have had long droughts, some longer than the Eagles.

Knights of Columbus give warmth in coats at Super Bowl city

MINNEAPOLIS — Students of St. John Paul II Catholic Preparatory School in Minneapolis joyfully put on brand new coats as current and former members of the Minnesota Vikings greeted them.

One of the Vikings’ backup quarterbacks, Kyle Sloter, and former offensive lineman Matt Birk high-fived the children, posed with them for pictures and signed autographs. Sloter and Birk partnered with the Knights of Columbus’ annual Coats for Kids drive, which takes place each Super Bowl week in the game’s host city.

Donnie Jones: From Catholic school all-star to Super Bowl punter

MINNEAPOLIS — Philadelphia Eagles punter Donnie Jones understands how rarely a chance to play in the Super Bowl comes around.

“I’ve only been once in 14 years, so it’s hard,” said Jones, 37. “I’ve tried to explain to these young guys that you don’t know when you’re going to get another shot. We’ve got to make the most of this, enjoy the week and get ready for playing the game on Sunday.”

Church leaders in Philly, Boston back their teams, support charities

PHILADELPHIA — A friendly wager between the archbishops of Philadelphia and Boston for Super Bowl LII Feb. 4 in Minneapolis between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots will benefit needy people in both cities.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia and Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley of Boston, both longtime friends and classmates from their seminary days as young Capuchin Franciscans, are wagering $100 donations to aid the poor in their archdioceses.

People ‘breaking free’ of sex trafficking are target of support group

ST. PAUL, Minn. — For Terry Forliti, a series of traumatic events as a teenager — being raped by her boss, her friend dying in a car accident and her parents divorcing — spurred heavy drug use that carried into adulthood.

But Forliti was able to function — up until her own divorce, being laid off from her job with a health care company and losing her home. An admitted alcoholic, she also lost custody of her two children. She saw her support system crumble, along with her self-worth. And when she sought treatment, her takeaway wasn’t recovery, but rather learning where to get more drugs.

Eagles Fever continues with Holy Angels ‘Souper Bowl’

It’s not officially an epidemic, but it’s not as if you can go anywhere in New Castle County or most of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington schools and not get a touch of Super Bowl Fever courtesy of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The NFC champion Eagles earned themselves a pass to Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis to square off Feb. 4 against the New England Patriots after Sunday’s 38-7 walloping of the Minnesota Vikings at Lincoln Financial Field.
