HOCKESSIN – St. Thomas More’s girls basketball team got off to a slow start Jan. 13, but the Ravens overwhelmed Wilmington Christian in the middle quarters on their way to a 63-35 win. The victory gave them the championship of the Wilmington Christian midseason tournament. Read more »

On their night, seniors lead St. Elizabeth to volleyball victory

WILMINGTON – It was Senior Night at St. Elizabeth, and the Vikings’ three 12th-graders, with some help from their younger teammates, showed the way in a 3-1 win over Wilmington Christian on Thursday night at the St. E Center. Set scores were 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-13.

The match was really a tale of two halves, as the first two sets were remarkably even, and the last two were firmly in the Vikings’ grasp. St. Elizabeth used a superior service game to power past the Warriors, who are athletic but young, with just one senior seeing regular playing time. Read more »

Field hockey: Padua edges Wilmington Christian, will meet Cape in semifinal

WILMINGTON – A goal by junior Marissa Sipala midway through the first half stood up for Padua, as the Pandas held off Wilmington Christian for a 1-0 victory Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the DIAA field hockey tournament at Tower Hill School. Padua advances to the semifinals, where it will meet three-time defending state champion Cape Henlopen.

The fourth-seeded Pandas and fifth-seeded Warriors were evenly matched much of the first half. The Pandas applied some pressure, but could not solve Wilmington Christian goalkeeper Emma Whitesel until Sipala emerged from a scramble in front of the Wilmington Christian and found an opening at the 9:45 mark.
