Sister Mildred Haipt, who spent many years in education in Delaware, died Aug. 4 at Andrus on Hudson Nursing Home. She was 98 and had been a member of the Ursuline Sisters for 72 years.
Born in Newark, N.J., Sister Millie graduated from Fordham University. She entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1954 and eventually earned a doctorate in education from the University of Maryland. Among her teaching assignments was Ursuline Academy in Wilmington. She also served on the board of Ursuline Academy and as director of education for the Ursulines of the Eastern Province.
After retiring from the classroom, Sister Millie was the founder and chairperson of Serviam Academy for Girls, a tuition-free middle school for girls originally located in New Castle. The school, based on the Nativity-Miguel school model, has since relocated to Wilmington. During this time, she also served as superior of the Ursuline Sisters community.
Visitation for Sister Millie will be Aug. 11 at 9:15 a.m., followed by the funeral Mass at 10:30. Services will be at the Ursuline Province Center, 1338 North Ave., New Rochelle, N.Y. They will be livestreamed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/events/1674772013623666/.
