Sister Bernice Pelczar, OSF, who served multiple agencies in Diocese of Wilmington, dies at 72

ASTON, Pa. — Sister Bernice Pelczar, a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 51 years, died Dec. 3 in Assisi House. She was 72.

Sister Bernice ministered primarily in education and social service. She spent 16 years in the Diocese of Wilmington as a caseworker and volunteer. She served at the Ministry of Caring, St. Francis Hospital, Sojourner’s Place, Bayard House, Literacy Volunteers Serving Adults, and the Delaware Humane Society. She ministered for 29 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia as a teacher and in social work. Sister Bernice also served in the dioceses of Allentown, Pa., and Gallup, N.M. She also spent a year in Puerto Rico.

Services will be Dec. 9 in Assisi House. A Christian wake service begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., with burial to follow in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S.
