Former St. John the Beloved principal Sister Elizabeth Doyle dies at 98

ASTON, Pa. – Sister Elizabeth Doyle, who ministered for 15 years in the Diocese of Wilmington, died April 3 at Assisi House. She was 98 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 77 years.

A native of Baltimore, Sister Elizabeth was the principal at St. John the Beloved School in Wilmington and also a pastoral visitor at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in New Castle. She worked in elementary education in the archdioceses of Washington, Baltimore and Mobile, Ala., and in the dioceses of Raleigh, N.C., and Pensacola, Fla.

Services will be held April 11 at Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Ave., Aston. A Christian wake service is set for 9:30 a.m., followed by a viewing and the Mass of Christian Burial at 11. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.

Sister Jean Rohe, teacher of generations, celebrates 100

ASTON, Pa. — Over the course of her ministry in education, Sister Jean Clare Rohe spent 27 years in the Diocese of Wilmington. What makes that extraordinary is that her first assignment in the diocese began in 1938, and her final one concluded in 2004.

Sister Jean’s three assignments in Wilmington are just a part of what she has accomplished in her first century. She turned 100 on March 12, “a simple farm girl that made good,” she said a few days before the big one. Her congregation, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, celebrated at Assisi House in Aston, Pa., with a day that included Mass in her honor and a party that brought together some 65 family members and friends. Obituary: Sister Margaret VanWagenen, 79, OSF

ASTON, Pa. – Sister Margaret VanWagenen, who spent four years as a resource teacher at Christ Our King School in the Diocee of Wilmington, died Dec. 19 in Assisi House. She was 79 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 59 years.

van-wagenen-1957_margaret610Sister Margaret, formerly known as Sister Florecita, was born in Mitchell, S.D. She ministered primarily in education and child care. She spent 20 years in the Archdiocese of Spokane, Wash., and also worked in the archdioceses of Portland, Ore., and Philadelphia, and in the Diocese of San Bernardino, Calif.

Services will be in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, on Dec. 21. A Christian wake service begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a viewing and Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Donations in Sister Margaret’s name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.

Franciscan Sister Columbkill O’Connor, former teacher, dies at 102

ASTON, Pa. – Sister Columbkill O’Connor, who spent three years teaching in the Diocese of Wilmington, died Nov. 6 at Assisi House. She was 102 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia since 1938.

columbkillIn the diocese, she taught at St. Mary School in Wilmington and Immaculate Conception in Elkton, Md. She spent 52 years in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, primarily in education but also in parish ministry, and 13 years in the Archdiocese of Washington.

Services for Sister Columbkill, who was born in County Kerry, Ireland, are Thursday in Aston. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. at Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston, with burial in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Donations in her name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.

Obituary: Sister Georgine Marie Smith, OSF, 88, taught in diocesan schools

ASTON, Pa. – Sister Georgine Marie Smith, who ministered for 16 years in the Diocese of Wilmington, died June 9 in Assisi House. She was 88 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 68 years.

Smith Georgine MarieSister Georgine Marie began her education ministry in the diocese at St. Paul School in Wilmington. She later returned and taught at St. Joseph on the Brandywine School in Greenville. She spent 41 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and also taught in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.

Services will be Wednesday, June 15, in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Road, Aston. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a viewing and the Mass of Christian Burial at 11. Burial will be in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Donations in Sister Georgine Marie’s memory can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.

Obituary: Sister Rosa Carmichael, OSF

ASTON, Pa. – Sister Rosa Carmichael, who ministered for 18 years in the Diocese of Wilmington, died in Assisi House on March 19. She was 94 and had been a professed member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia for 70 years.

Carmichael 1946_Rosa71Sister Rosa was a registered nurse and worked at St. Francis Hospital from 1949-68 with the exception of one year. From 1949-57 she was a head nurse and supervisor. She was an instructor in the hospital’s school of nursing from 1957-61, and she returned in 1962 as the director of nursing.

She spent most of her ministry in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and also worked in the dioceses of Allentown and Trenton.

Services will be March 23 in Assisi House, 600 Red Hill Ave., Aston. A Christian Wake Service will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a viewing. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., with burial in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Donations in Sister Rosa’s name can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
