WILMINGTON – Salesianum continued its challenging schedule on Feb. 18 as fourth-ranked Smyrna visited Father Birkenheuer Gymnasium. The Eagles got out to a big lead and survived a second-half comeback, traveling back to Smyrna with a 53-51 win.

The Sals trailed, 47-38, heading into the fourth quarter, but they did not wilt. Freshman Fahmir Ali scored and was fouled, completing the old-fashioned three-point play, and classmate Tariq Ingraham added a bucket inside to cut the deficit to four. Read more »

NEWARK – The Division I football state championship came down to one play, and the Smyrna Eagles responded at the most important time. Smyrna’s defense stopped Salesianum’s bruising Colby Reeder on fourth down from the 1-yard line in overtime, giving the Eagles a 32-26 win and the 2015 state championship.

Salesianum won the coin toss in overtime and elected to give Smyrna the first possession. A holding call put the Eagles in a third-and-20 situation, but quarterback Nolan Henderson hit Jared Gillis for 19 yards. WILMIMNGTON – Salesianum scored early and often in a showdown with Smyrna on Friday night, but the Sals could not put the Eagles away until the fourth quarter in a 76-56 win at Baynard Stadium. Senior running back Colby Reeder was the offensive star on a night full of offense as he rushed for 394 yards on 34 carries and scored seven touchdowns.

Reeder got the scoring started, appropriately, on the opening drive, reaching the end zone on a seven-yard run. Reeder played some defense as well, intercepting a pass on Smyrna’s first play from scrimmage. That set up his own 25-yard touchdown run, increasing the lead to 14-0 in front of a full house at Baynard. Reeder scored the next Salesianum TD as well, as the home team went up, 21-0. Read more »
