Ursuline senior Connolly is girls basketball player of year as all-state teams named

Maggie Connolly, Ursuline’s senior guard who just completed her fifth season of varsity basketball, has been named the girls’ player of the year. Connolly led the Raiders to a berth in the state semifinals, where they fell to eventual state champion Conrad. Read more »

Several Catholic school players among boys all-state selections

Nate Thomas, the senior forward who helped lead St. Elizabeth to its first boys basketball championship, earned third-team all-state honors. He was the lone player from a Catholic high school to make any of the first three teams. Read more »

‘VK Nation’ shows love to St. Elizabeth boys basketball team, and feeling is mutual

NEWARK – There’s a proud sports history at St. Elizabeth High School, where generations of students have suited up in the maroon and gold over the years. The school also has a loyal and devoted fan base comprising students, alumni, parishioners and community members.

“VK Nation” showed up in force at the Bob Carpenter Center on March 10, and they went home a happy bunch as the boys’ basketball team defeated Smyrna, 60-49, for the program’s first state championship. The players almost immediately ascended into the end-zone bleachers where their schoolmates had cheered themselves hoarse, soaking in the atmosphere. Read more »

St. Elizabeth pulls one more upset, captures first boys basketball crown

NEWARK – Guy DeBonaventura played eight minutes in the boys’ state basketball championship game for St. Elizabeth against Smyrna on March 10 at the Bob Carpenter Center, and he scored just three points. But the senior’s three-pointer with 5:06 to go put the Vikings ahead for good as St. Elizabeth earned its first title with a 60-49 triumph that was closer that the final score would indicate.

For DeBonaventura, who missed several games with a broken hand late in the season, getting that pass from classmate Nate Thomas meant a ton. Read more »

Ursuline’s time as girls basketball champions ends with semifinal loss to Conrad

NEWARK – In a season that began with a series of challenges, the Ursuline basketball team was able to overcome injuries and transfers to earn the seventh seed in the DIAA state tournament. The Raiders reached the semifinal round with a stunning victory over No. 2 seed Sanford last weekend.

But the season came to a conclusion on March 9 at the Bob Carpenter Center with a 40-37 loss to the third seed, Conrad, who moved on to a date Monday night against No. 1 Caravel for the state championship. The loss brought to an end the Raiders’ three-year reign as state champs. Read more »

St. Elizabeth knocks off Caravel, advances to boys hoops final for first time

NEWARK – St. Elizabeth watched Caravel’s superb scorer, O’Koye Parker, go without a point in the first half of the teams’ matchup in the semifinal round of the DIAA boys’ state basketball tournament, but they knew he could get hot at any time. That time came in the third quarter, when Parker scored 11 points, but the Vikings withstood the Buccaneers’ comeback attempt and advanced to their first state championship game with a 57-41 win March 8 at the Bob Carpenter Center. NEWARK – The seventh-seeded Ursuline Raiders found themselves trailing the second-seeded Sanford Warriors, 45-36, with one minute to go in the third quarter on March 4 at the Bob Carpenter Center. They would outscore the Warriors, 15-3, in the final nine minutes to punch their ticket to the semifinals this Wednesday night with the 51-48 win. Read more »
