Auks storm back for wrestling win at Friends

ALAPOCAS – Archmere received three straight pins in the smaller weight classes, but it took a final pin by senior Jake Mottola to clinch a 37-30 Auks win in wrestling on Jan. 26 at Wilmington Friends.

The match started at the 182-lb. class, and after an opening decision for Archmere’s Patrick Wicks, the host Quakers won the next three matches – two by pin – to take a 15-3 lead. Archmere coach Dan Lutz said he was not surprised that Friends controlled the action early. Read more »

Delaware sports hall of fame to honor St. Mark’s DeMatteis

WILMINGTON — In the fall of 1979, Tom DeMatteis scored the first goal in the history of varsity soccer at St. Mark’s High School.

Seven years later, in his initial season as the Spartans’ boys head coach, he guided St. Mark’s to its first state championship in the sport, but certainly not its last. The Spartans won 10 more titles during his 25 seasons at the helm. Read more »

Delle Donne named Special Olympics ambassador

WILMINGTON – Elena Delle Donne, the Wilmington native and the reigning WNBA rookie of the year, has been named a global ambassador for Special Olympics, according to her alma mater, Ursuline Academy.

The announcement will be made tomorrow with Delle Donne appearing at Ursuline via Google+ from Chicago, where she plays with the Sky. Delle Donne then will take questions from Ursuline students about her basketball career and her new role with Special Olympics. Read more »
