Alma mater influences work in State Department

WILMINGTON – Lisa Krzywicki, a 2000 gradaute of St. Mark’s High School, told senior class leaders that her time at the school played a key role in her leadership development.

“It was at St. Mark’s that I realized it is perfectly okay to openly display my faith by being a Eucharistic minister at school Masses and participating in class retreats (and) it was at St. Mark’s that I met the teachers and leaders who would help me grow and develop who I was spiritually, strengthening and sharpening my faith, which I carry with me today,” she said. Mass appeals to St. E senior: Singing and helping others part of Centrone’s ways to serve

By

Staff reporter

WILMINGTON — If there’s a Mass going on when Maria Centrone is in a church, chances are she’s involved. The St. Elizabeth High School senior is not one to sit in a pew for an hour.

“I kind of run around during church. That’s my thing. I feel weird if I just go to Mass and sit there and don’t have to do anything. That’s the most bizarre feeling for me, to go to Mass and not participate,” she said.

Whether the service is at St. Elizabeth or her parish, Holy Angels in Newark, Centrone keeps busy. She sings at Masses and is a Eucharistic minister; she also cantors at St. John the Baptist-Holy Angels Parish, either solo or as a member of the choir. She has been singing at her church since third grade. Read more »

Art students work to relieve stress

WILMINGTON – Ursuline Academy’s art forum class, comprised of juniors and seniors from Ursuline and Salesianum, presented its annual marketing campaign, “Mind over Matter: Stress Is a Serious Matter,” recently to a group of health professionals.

Each year, the class breaks into advertising agencies to tackle issues facing teens today. This year, the three agencies each developed stress-relief kits that included items such as aromatherapy, candy, books, movies and more. The groups had to take factors such as the cost of production, shipping and design into account. Read more »

Rodriguez leads Vikings to girls’ state basketball title, 60-46, over Caravel

By

NEWARK – A half-hour after St. Elizabeth had dispatched Caravel, 60-46, for the girls’ state basketball championship Monday night, Jocelyn Rodriguez had yet to leave the floor of the Bob Carpenter Center.

First, the star guard and lone senior on the Vikings’ roster joined her teammates celebrating with their schoolmates. Then she accepted the champions’ trophy and cut down the last section of the net, which then rested around her neck. It was off to meet the media after that. Finally, she made her way to the corner of the arena, where her family patiently waited. Read more »

Late hoop propels Vikings past Ursuline, into girls basketball final

By

Staff reporter

NEWARK – After losing twice to Ursuline during the regular season, by a combined total of four points, St. Elizabeth was not looking for a repeat performance. But there were the Vikings and Raiders Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center, with a trip to the girls’ state basketball championship game on the line, tied at 44 with under a minute to play.

The Vikings, who led by as many as nine points in the contest only to see Ursuline fight back, had the ball under their own net. They had struggled with turnovers and Ursuline’s pressure the entire fourth quarter, but when it mattered most, Sabrina Hackendorn broke free, took a pass and calmly laid in the deciding field goal in St. Elizabeth’s 46-44 win. Thirty-eight frantic seconds later, after several timeouts, fouls, missed free throws and skipped heartbeats, Brenna Williams’ prayer from 70 feet fell far short of the hoop, and the Vikings celebrated a hard-fought win. Sals fall to Sanford in boys basketball semifinal

By

Staff reporter

NEWARK – Sanford School needed a late comeback Tuesday night in the boys’ basketball state quarterfinal matchup against Friends, escaping with a one-point win. The Warriors did not repeat that performance Thursday when they met Salesianum in a semifinal, taking control early and cruising to a 60-40 win in front of a sellout crowd at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Warriors (19-4) will play for their fourth straight state championship Saturday at 1 p.m. against Howard, also at the Bob. Howard defeated Hodgson, 55-48, in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader. The teams did not meet during the regular season. Read more »
